WESSELHOFT — "We are using the name WESSELHOFT, which was changed from WESSELHOEFT around the time of WWI because it sounded less "German" without the "e". Some of my grandfathers sisters continued with the "e" until they died (without descendents). My grandfather, who was just a baby when the family came to America about 1863, used WESSELHOFT, as did my father (1896-1978). and my brother and I. Our sons and grandsons continue the WESSELHOFT tradition. My earliest name in the Family tree is Heinrich Nicholas WESSELHOEFT who was born in Hamburg (?) February 25, 1804. What his lineage is I have been unable to determine, but I have a tree from another side of the WESSELHOEFT (they still use the "e") family that traces it's lineage back through Johann WESSELHOEFT and three generations of Hinrich WESSELHOVET's before him. I think Johann had a brother named Hinrich but I am not certain. If they followed German tradition, with 3 generations of Hinrich before, there is a good chance the H(e)inrich name continued through until my great-great-grandfather. According to what I know about Heinrich Nicholas, he was a shoemaker to the Kaiser, and a member of the Kaiser's Horse Guards. He lived in Mark Friedland. There are a number of WESSELHOFT's around the country, but as far as I know, the are not related to us. I have talked to a lady in NYC who is from the Virgin Islands branch. She uses the WESSELHOFT name, and they are black. There are also some WESSELHOFT's in Oklahoma from a different family." (Information sent to me by Victor Wesselhoft, US – 051101)
